Unst is situated at latitude 61 degrees north and longitude 1 degree west,
185 miles (296 Km) west of Bergen in Norway, practically in the path of
the North Atlantic Drift (Gulf Stream current). Consequently, Unst never
really gets cold in winter because of the influence of the warm Gulf Stream -
but fierce storms are still quite common, particularly in winter.
The
island itself is about 8 km wide by 20km long, and has about 70 km of
shore-line. To the northwest of Unst are the Faroe Islands; Iceland lies
